You’ve set a date, booked your venue, tried on and bought the perfect gown, and now it’s time to start thinking about bridal beauty. No matter which is your preferred style of make-up, it’s important that you look flawless on your big day. Whether you’re braving doing your make-up by yourself, having an experienced friend or family member do it for you, or hiring a professional, we’ve put together a handy list of do’s and don’ts to ensure that you’re looking your best when you tie the knot.
DO:
Trial First: There would be nothing worse than to apply your make-up on the morning of the wedding to find out that the style you’ve gone for doesn’t suit. If you want to get it perfect, trial the make-up a couple of weeks before to ensure that you’ve made the right decision.
White T-Shirt: When you go for your make-up trial, wear a white or other lightly coloured t-shirt to see how the make-up looks when you’re wearing something similarly coloured to your wedding dress.
Emphasise: Make-up expert Bobbi Brown advises brides to emphasize their eyes using corrector and concealer in order to eliminate any darkness underneath them.
Consider Your Skin Colour: It’s great to have references for your make-up, but you need to take into consideration that certain make-up styles won’t suit you if they’re on somebody with a completely different skin type and/or colour. Choose references that are closely matched to your skin for your make-up artist to work with.
Individual Eyelashes: If you’re planning on wearing false eyelashes as part of your bridal make-up, opt for the individual lash type rather than a full strip. These will make your eyes stand out more and also look more subtle, and going for differing lengths will create a more natural appearance.
DON’T:
Use Fluorescent Lighting: If you use too much artificial light, you might find that your make-up looks completely different once you step outside. If you have a make-up artist coming to your home, make sure that it’s daylight outside and sit near a window to have it applied.
Use a Trowel: Ok, maybe not a literal trowel – but it’s a common myth that you need to use lots and lots of make-up in order for it to look good. In fact, the best make-up artists will tell you that natural looking make-up often looks the best, and the ‘less is more’ rule has never been truer when it comes to bridal make-up.
Follow Trends: Although some make-up trends are great, it’s important not to go completely for anything trend-led when it comes to your bridal make-up. Your make-up artist will be able to base looks on current trends that you like, but as a general rule you should opt for make-up styles and shades that match your complexion rather than something that’s in fashion – trust us, it will look better.
